Post-event survey of the July 17, 1998 Papua New Guinea earthquake.
The first field survey of the tsunami caused by the July 17, 1998
Papua New Guinea earthquake was carried out by the International
Tsunami Survey Team (ITST) during the period of 31 July to 7 August
1998.
The members of the ITST were:

- Fumihiko Imamura, Tohoku University, Japan;

- Hideo Matsutomi, Akita University, Japan;
- Jonathan Nott, James Cook University, Australia;
- Emil Okal, The Northwestern University, USA;
- Costas E. Synolakis, Univ. Southern Calif., USA;
- Tomoyuki Takahashi, Kyoto University, Japan;
- Yoshinobu Tsuji, Univ.Tokyo, Japan
The survey confirmed the 7 - 10 m wave run-up heights earlier reported
and found the place with maximum height up to 15 m.
